XnaRacingGame.com goes online

by Benjamin Nitschke 27. April 2007 19:24

I have put together a little website for the XNA Racing Game Starter Kit released yesterday on
http://creators.xna.com/Education/StarterKits.aspx

Here you go: http://www.XnaRacingGame.com

A little rant about the XNA Racing Game Starter Kit download: The download file is 130 MB in size and will eat up almost 290 MB of your hard disk space extracted. It is also only available in the .vsi format and can't be used in anything but XNA Game Studio Express or Visual C# Express. The main reason for this incredible size is the Textures directory, with uses mainly uncompressed .TGA files. The original Racing Game version had only about 50-70 MB in total with DDS textures and the Simple Racing Game version from my book is even smaller (30 MB I think, but a lot of content is not in there, its a also a much smaller and simplified project).

Microsoft has also removed all credits of me, all readmes, all unit tests, most comments, some screens like the credit screens. It's a little bit sad for me because all references to me or my website were removed and I'm not even mentioned on the starter kit download page :( I think the starter kit is now much harder to understand because there are no unit tests in the code to test anything out. Anyway, I just hope the XNA Racing Game Starter Kit is useful for you guys, it helps XNA and everyone wins :-)

Update 2007-05-01: I'm now mentioned on http://creators.xna.com and happy :)

It really hurts when you expect to be referenced and then you're not ... but anyway life goes on ... cheers for your book! I still waiting for my copy to arrive ...

Too bad regarding the unit tests :-(  I guess they could be confusing for people not used to that kind of practice, but that was a good opportunity to introduce it to more programmers in the game development community, imho.
Good job anyway, I'm going to try the game right now! Smile

WTF?
Whsy did they remove the unit tests? How could they be confusing for developers? I mean: this are 1-few functions each at the end of the class file and easily visible in the "#region DEBUG"! It's the dumbest thing they could've made. It would be a great benefit _especially for beginners_! if they had unit tests. To check out individually how each function/class works. It's much harder to work out how a class works if it's in the whole game-code and you have to set breakpoints, wait till the event happens that enters the class, and so on. Just time-waisting and sometimes anoying. Grrrr!

I will just sign-on to the XNA-Forums just to complain about this dumb idea.

I complained on the XNA Forums and they deleted my post.

Congratulations on your book Ben! It is sad that your name has been removed from the starter kit, although Im sure most if not all budding XNA coders know it was your handy work Smile

My local bookstore say they will have my copy for me next week...can't wait... Thanks again! You have done the XNA community a great thing.

Wow, the racing game starer kit! Pretty cool, but it's not cool that I get 15 FPS on 640x480 with low details, no shadows and no post processing effects Frown
Also, I don't know if anyone had the same issue, some of the music files couldn't be copied from the zip so I had to remove them, and the content installer did install the starter kit but strangely, it didn't show up in the New Project window in C#...

Anyway, good work and I hope you will make more starter kits Tong

I cant see what you mean with not referenced? On the http://www.xnaracinggame.com/ site there is big button at the right side "made by abi.exdream.com & exDream Entertainment" and on http://creators.xna.com/Education/StarterKits.aspx Ben is even mentioned with his full name plus a link to the exdream homepage.

IIRC the mentioning isn't new. But the link! They edited the last mentioned website and added a link to his company.

And BTW: a tool which re-adds all the unit tests would be nice.
Hopefully the Unit Tests helper classes still exists and work. Otherwise they must also be re-added to the project.

I may be mistaken, but I think that http://www.XnaRacingGame.com is actually Abi's own site and not Microsoft's.

Great job on the starter kit and book. I'm going to grab a copy when I come up to breath from my WPF duties right now. I was very vocal at our code camp recently where we did two XNA sessions and I told people the entire racing starter kit was written by one guy, you. I think it's sad that MS chooses to make things like this branded and anonymous, but I will always pimp your name next to great jobs like this so that everyone knows.
